Walking into Mom and Popcorn Company brings back nostalgic memories of yesteryear. This is in part due to their location: in the 150 year old historic downtown McKinney Texas, right next to Posy Lane on Louisiana street. But more so because the store inside is paneled in warm, rich wood paneling, candy and saltwater taffy is heaped open in barrels, and jars of chocolates line the walls.

Behind the counter are rows and rows of gourmet popcorn flavors – buttery, cheese, creamy dill, loaded baked potato, ranch, over 50 flavors in all. Owner Tim Loyd has spent the last three years developing each flavor recipe. Popcorn tins and boxes make a very popular gift for corporate thank-you’s or party favors. Popcorn tins come in just about every university logo or team logo out there.

And don’t forget their fudge! Fudge is handmade every day with constantly changing flavors.

Third day of the TIP Seminar.

Rainy Day.
Early this morn the university canteen cooked tossino and fried dried fish for breakfast with 3-in-1 coffee for the participants of the TIP seminar. I love coffee, but I don’t think tossino and fried dried fish are good combination for breakfast today. I only eat tossino. I gave my fried dried fish to my friend. He loves eating it. I love to eat fried dried fish if I am at home. Dried fish is best to eat using bare hands.
The resource speaker is Mr. D. He is a Mathematics and Science teacher teaching high school in the said university. He talks on Development Improvised Instructional Material: A Multiple Intelligence Approach. He presented different improvised instructional materials to be used/applied by us as we go back to our respective schools. Since, some schools don’t have complete equipments (like our school) to be used in conducting experiments or simply doing the Science and Mathematics activities. The following listed below are the suggested improvised instructional materials (with patterns):
1. Prism pattern
2. Tangram
3. Air Convection Apparatus
4. Simple Leaf Electroscope
5. Electrolysis Apparatus
6. the Resonance Tube
7. Sun-Earth-Model
8. Joule’s Calorimeter
9. Human Skeletal System Model
10. Human Anatomical Model
11. Clinometers

Making of improvised instructional materials is the best way I can do because I can’t buy all the materials. Firstly, it is expensive. Secondly, the availability of the materials is limited or not available in my area.

LUNCBREAK: What’s wrong with him?

The table where I and my friends usually eat was occupied by other teachers who came in early in the canteen. So, we sat to other table next to it. After eating, I noticed a plate with a piece of adobong manok uneaten. I asked a female teacher seated before to the one left the uneaten piece of chicken. She replied,” I heard him saying to the woman seated in front of him that chicken makes our belly bigger”. I sighed. If he thinks chicken can make him fatter then why he ordered it and never dare to eat it? Is he trying to make “pogi” to the woman? Daaaaaahhh, I murmured. “Is the woman he ate with his girlfriend? I asked again. “No, I think he tries to impress the woman (nagpapacute lang),”the female teacher answered. Waaaaaaahhh! It’s a waste of food! Crisis pa naman!

The Teacher as a Person

There is no more noble profession than teaching. A great teacher is a great artist, but his medium is not a canvass but the human soul”. I quoted these lines from one of our speakers in a 5-Day Seminar on Teacher Inductive Program (TIP) for Newly Hired and Locally Funded Teachers with the theme: Rearticulating the Teaching-Learning Process among Novice Teachers: Towards a Learning Centered Environment- the NCBTS Framework
, held in SPUS, Surigao. (Actually, the resource speaker originally quoted the lines from the anonymous writer. She shared it to us for us to reflect on). Personally, I inspired by it, so, I want to share it to you (readers esp. the teachers) hoping that it may inspires you also).

The speaker shared her topic on Professionalism of Teachers: Responsibility and Accountability. She cited the twelve successful qualities of good teachers according to Ornstein in 1990. The twelve successful qualities of good teacher are:

Intelligence. Good teachers are those who possess average to high intelligence. The better teachers are those with high intelligence identified quotient (IQ) and must exhibit one or more of the multiple intelligences identified by Garner (Visual-Spatial, Bodily-Kinesthetic, Musical, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, Linguistic, Logical-Mathematical).

Emotional Stability. Aside from having a high intelligence quotient (IQ), a person who will make a good teacher must also have a high emotional quotient (EQ).
This teacher is not easily upset by petty things; does not worry a lot; does not find difficulty in adjusting to new situations, and does not panic when pressured.
This teacher is cheerful and optimistic, self-controlled, patient and level-headed.

Resourcefulness. A person who is resourceful can easily find ways to solve a problem by making use of what is available; one who can always “makes do” with what is at hand and stimulate other people to make use of available materials, time and resources. He/she can be depended in times of difficulty and hardships and can make big things happen using limited resources.

Consideration and Compassion. This person is kind, friendly, courteous, helpful, thoughtful and tolerant. He or she who looks beyond oneself and is aware that no one is an island by oneself. This person feels what others feel.
He or she believes in individual differences; hence, respects other persons’ strengths and weaknesses, is patient, good natured and tactful in dealing with others.

Buoyance. A person who is buoyant survives difficulties; know how to balance life in the midst of adversities, a great optimist who always looks at the positive side of life. This person is cheerful, has high interpersonal intelligence and a good sense of humor. He or she is alert and gregarious and loves the company of other people.

Objectivity. An objective person does not make judgment unless sufficient evidence is presented. This person puts aside personal consideration in the search for truth, constantly looking for explanations and giving equal chance for all to be heard.

Drive and Self-Motivation. Individuals who succeed in life and in their chosen career are those who are self-driven and self-motivated. They have the physical vigor to do their job. They never leave any assigned task unfinished and they perform at their best. They do their work without being supervised. They are goal-oriented and they seek various avenues to accomplish these goals.
In contrast, some people are laid-back. They are externally motivated and are easily discouraged. They are slow in action and lack endurance. They lack a sense of urgency and need to be pushed all the time.

Dominance and Self-confidence. A dominant and self-confident person believes in himself/herself and in what he/she can do. He/she is determined to accomplish something with success. He/she believes in the saying, “no guts, no glory”.
Some characteristics of a dominant and self-confident person include courage, decisiveness, determination and self-reliance.

Attractiveness and Pleasures. Attractiveness and pleasantness are very important because a teacher as the most important visual aid in the classroom. The person has to neat, clean, charming and well-poised. The person has to carry himself well and must be appropriately dressed from head to toe.
“Simplicity is beauty”, so the saying goes. When one is attractive and pleasant, that person is more respectable.

Refinement. Good taste and social graces bespeak of a refined person. Refinement is not inborn but it is greatly developed and influenced by the people and the environment where one lives. Refinement is manifested in one’s demeanor, actions, body language and words. It is greatly influenced by nurture rather than nature. Your choice of clothes, words to use, actions to take are dictated by your upbringing and breeding.

Cooperativeness. To be a good teacher, one has to be cooperative, friendly, generous, adaptive, flexible, responsive, trustful and charitable.
In cooperation, one’s success is everybody’s success; there is no “me” nor “you” but “we”.
Reliability and Dependability. A reliable and dependable person is one whom others lean on for support. He/she is honest and sincere in words and actions.

I am a certified “internet addict” (whether you will agree or not :-)). All I know before were chatting in YM and sent messages in the e-mail. I spent ample time chatting with my friends and new found friends in the net from the other side of the world. I also was spending (not) so much money renting in the internet cafĂ©. (Well, until now still I don’t have internet connection at home. I can’t afford Smart BroadbandJ).
When friendster.com and youtube.com were born, I set aside chatting and focused on creating lay out and other application offered for my friendster.com account. I changed once, twice, thrice or more my friendster layout but ended a messy webpage. Check my friendster profile at www.friendster.com/veta897. (See it for yourself.) Another site that made me crazy is http://www.youtube.com/. In fact, I, with my friend, uploaded two videos using my friend’s youtube.com account. Check ‘igiling-giling’ by Willie Revillame. I also uploaded four videos under the category of travel.
And now, blogblogblog makes me wacky. I think of it 24/7. The reason why I created my own account in the blogspot.com because I was inspired by…(I can’t write her name because I haven’t ask permission from her). I really enjoy reading her blog. She’s intelligent (and medyo strict ;-)). Her site is the simplest, yet attractive template, the contents are very essential, sensible and not boring to read. It’s almost perfect.
As I start blog hopping, I noticed some features featured in other blogsites. They talked on paid post. I wonder what is paid post. I asked Miss C about it. She confirmed that we can earn/make money thru blog. And so I click and join PPP. PPP replied:

Slippery Pathway

October 22, 2008, Wednesday at 5:30 in the morning, the rain stopped falling. The breeze of the wind was slightly cold, wet ground and the light outside was dimmer.
I fetched water. Fetching water from the well is the hardest chore for me to do. My arms getting hurt carrying pails of water and pumping the water pump. Unlike in the city, faucet is widely use. If I don’t fetch water, I don’t have water to use for cooking, washing, bathing and etc.
After doing my daily routines, I put on my pink uniform and arranged my things to be used in school. At 7:00 0’clock, I headed for school. I was three meters away from my room; I accidentally slid and fell on the ground. I stepped on the slippery part of the pathway. I slowly helped myself to stand. I gradually held my head up; I saw all the eyes of the children stared closely at me. Their lips formed letter ‘O’. I smiled at them, tried to tell them ‘I’m OK’. Two beautiful girls approached me and shyly asked, “Are you okay ma’am?” ‘Of course, I’m not’, these words uttered at the back of my mind. I simply smiled at them. I complained that my knee, arms and palm hurt. They helped me and carried the things I brought. Some of it was covered by mud including my fone and wrist watch. I went home to change clothes.
(Thanks God, the children don't have a cam to capture the embarassing moment in my life.)

Full Moon

October 14, 2008, Tuesday night, I was writing a lesson plan when I heard children laughing and shouting. I went out to see where the annoying noise came from. As I stepped out from the door, I was amazed. I sighted my wrist watch, its 7:35 PM but the brightness of light seemed like 5:45 AM. I looked up at the sky, the moon was full. I felt relaxed staring at the full moon and countless stars. The annoying noise became music to my ears. I watched the children playing “buyan buyan” and Ferris wheel

I remember when I was young, I used to play “buyan buyan” with my childhood friends under the moonlit. Even when I fell asleep, I still played “buyan buyan” in my dream. (Not to mention the wet mat I slept with ssssshhhh!)

Pills

October 15, 2008, Wednesday morning, I was in the middle of my lesson discussion when one of the barangay officials appeared to me. She asked permission from me. She wanted the children to go to the barangay clinic to take Vitamin A, deworming tablet and a pill for the prevention of filariasis. I freed the children. The children returned after 15 minutes.
At 1:20 PM, I checked the attendance for the afternoon session. Two were absent (a boy and a girl). I asked their classmates why the two children went home. The pupils replied that the two children were not feeling well. I thought they were suffering simple headache.
October 16, 2008, at 7:07 AM, a parent went to my house. She told me what had happened to her grandson yesterday. Her grandson was vomiting because of the pill. She blamed the barangay health official for what had happened to her ‘apo’. I was also informed that the other child (girl) also vomited yesterday because of the pill she took. Thanks God they were OK now.

Cell Phone

Is this the fone you are still using? What is the brand of your cellphone? Is it the expensive one? Is it the latest model?
If Nokia would give an award for those who are still using the oldest model, maybe I will win. The cell phone I am still using right now (for four years) is Nokia 3315 (upgraded ;-) refer pic above).

Cactus and Caterpillar

October 11, 2008

Our principal, Mr. Antallan, called out a meeting. It was the FIRST ISLAND TEACHERS MEETING. The agenda were: Mathematics Festival, Attendance of the Teachers, Visitation of the Monitoring Supervisors, Reading Reinforcement, School Beautification and DEDP (Division Education Development Plan).
The meeting started with a prayer led by Miss Rado. It was followed by short message given by the two principals, Mr. Antallan and Ms. Villafranca. To make the meeting interesting, the two principals gave us a mental/psychological test. There were 10 questions. Instead of answering in the paper, we used the tissue paper. The test called “TISSUE PHSYCHOLOGY”. It is to prove that bathroom tissue is not only used in the toilet but it can be utilized to other uses. After we checked our answers, Mr. Antallan, gave the interpretations on how we utilized the tissue. The interpretations were:

1. If your tissue is still intact: you are graceful, a sensitive person and careful of your belongings and treasures family.
2. If ¾ of the tissue paper was utilized: you are a wise spender, flexible, knows how to balance family and career.
3. Utilized less than half of the tissue paper: you are thrifty, insecure, people who think of tomorrow.
4. If the tissue paper was not utilized: you are a planner (Planning to utilize the paper for its appropriate uses).

The meeting ended by reading a short story entitled: The Butterfly and The Flower

The Butterfly and the Flower
(Source: Reader’s Digest, May 2008)

Once there was a man who asked God for a flower….and a butterfly. But instead, God gave him a cactus ….and a caterpillar. The man was sad; he didn’t understand why his request was mistaken.
Then he thought:
“Oh well, God has too many people to care for….and decided not to question.”
After sometime, the man went to check up on his request that he had left forgotten. To his surprise, from the thorny and ugly cactus a beautiful flower grown. And the unsightly caterpillar had been transformed into the most beautiful butterfly.
God always does things right!
His way is always the best way, even if to us it seems all wrong. If you asked God for one thing and received another, TRUST. You can be sure that He will always give you what you need at the appropriate time. What you want….is not always what you need!
God never fails to grant our petitions so keep on going for Him without doubting or murmuring.
Today’s THORN….Is tomorrow’s FLOWER!
God gives the very best to those who leave the choices up to HIM!
God bless.

Hang Out

Early morning today, I watched movie with my sister, Lori, the movie was led by KC Concepcion and Richard Guttierez. The movie was quite hilarious maybe because of Candy Pangilinan known as ‘comedyante’. As a whole, I rated the movie 95%.
At 10:00 am, Sheryl, my friend, texted me. She said that we will visit Venessa. Sheryl and Venessa are some of my closest friends. The three of us teach in an island schools. But they were transferred to mainland school this year. I left in the island and it made me sad. After reading the message, I hurriedly fixed myself.
Sheryl is still the talkative among us. Venessa as usual the so called “cartoon network” trait. And I am the clown. I just couldn’t stop laughing every time we’ve been together. We talked anything under the sun. Since, they both have their own family, they teased me to get marry this year and their children will be the flowers girls. I answered them with a big smile. (I hope so).

To be familiar with the place I worked, the pictures show the real setting of the Philippines especially places situated in an island area. This place has no electricity during the day. The light will on at 5:00 pm and off at 12 midnight. The meaning of Sidlakan is “the rising sun”. Most people are fishermen.
